Highlights from Monday's high school sports action involving teams from the Pikes Peak region:
Pine Creek 6, Air Academy 1
At Air Academy: Pine Creek stayed unbeaten in duals, winning every match but No. 4 doubles.
The Eagles were led by Nicole Kalhorn at No. 1 singles, who topped Jenna Milliman 6-3, 6-2. Sarah Kosbab topped Clair Zombola 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles and Hannah Clack won in two sets at No. 3 singles.
Sand Creek 5, Wasson 2
At Sand Creek: Sand Creek won all three singles matches in straight sets in defeating Wasson.
Andrea Jantosovicova topped Wasson’s Jacie Walton 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 singles and Abby Shepherd (No. 2) and Amanda Tarby (No. 3) took their matches by a combined 24 games to five.
Wasson’s victories came at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles.
CSS 5, Fountain Valley 2
At Memorial Park: CSS took the top two singles and top three doubles matches in the dual victory.
Douglas County 15, Pine Creek 5
At Pine Creek: Douglas County (6-5) sped to an 11-2 lead in the first half.
Kristen Eller and Chrissy Martinez each scored two goals for Pine Creek (3-7).
Lewis-Palmer 7, Woodland Park 0
At Lewis-Palmer: Erika Balk scored three goals and Kourtney Guetlein had two goals and three assists as Lewis-Palmer (7-3-1, 5-1 4A Metro) secured the No. 2 seed from the Mountains Division in the 4A Metro crossover tournament that begins on Thursday.
The Rangers could potentially catch Cheyenne Mountain in the standings, but the Indians hold the head-to-head tiebreaker. Similarly, Sand Creek could catch Lewis-Palmer, but the Rangers won their meeting.
Speaking of tiebreakers, one could come into play to determine if Discovery Canyon or Woodland Park (4-7-1) will take the Mountains’ No. 4 seed. If Discovery Canyon tops Wasson on Tuesday, both the Thunder and Panthers will be 3-3-1 in the league. They tied when they met head-to-head.
TCA 4, Denver Christian 0
At TCA: Joanie Jacks scored twice and TCA (9-1-2) kept alive an unbeaten streak that dates back to March 15.
The Titans also had goals from Ashlee Chasteen and CheyAnn Queener.
Denver Christian (2-6-2) was peppered with 17 shots from TCA.
Air Academy 2, Palmer 0
At Palmer: Sarah Schweiss and Jessica Garrett each scored goals as Air Academy completed four games against 5A Metro competition at a perfect 4-0 without so much as allowing a goal.
The 4A Kadets (9-2) outscored their area 5A foes – Liberty, Palmer, Pine Creek and Rampart – by a combined 10-0.
Palmer (2-6-3) was stymied on four shots against Air Academy goalie Sierra Daniger.
Liberty’s Nunez commits to D-II men’s volleyball program
Liberty senior Nico Nunez became one of just a handful of Colorado Springs-area players to ever sign on with a collegiate men’s volleyball program, turning in a letter of intent to play at Alderson Broaddus College in West Virginia.
Since volleyball is offered only as a girls’ sport through the Colorado High School Activities Association, male athletes in the state are often seen only at camps and through club and intramural games.
