Some people merely talk about setting the bar. Sand Creek's Rebecca Harris, a sophomore, literally did just that last Saturday at the Pueblo Centennial Bulldog Invitational at Dutch Clark Stadium.

With a meet-winning high jump of 5 feet, 3 inches (a school record), Harris not only won the event by a whopping 3 inches, she turned in the state’s best effort, one that would have won the 4A state title last year.

“I wasn’t expecting that kind of jump at this point of the season,” said Harris, a native of Santa Rosa, Calif., who also ran on the winning 400-meter relay team and was runner-up in the 800 relay. “I want to try to get to 5-6 by state. Every inch is a big difference, but I’m ready to go for it.”

QUICK HITS

Is it true you have a talent that has little to do with athletics?

Does juggling count? I can do that. I can juggle three objects at one time, and I’m working on four.”

Will you be working on that during spring break?

A little. Mainly, I’m ready to relax and take a step back from everything.

What else do you do besides track?

I played shortstop on the varsity softball team last year. I haven’t decided which sport I like the best. It’s about 50-50. They’re both really fun.

What do you do for fun?

I usually stay on my athletic side in my spare time, usually riding my bike or going for a walk. When I’m indoors, I’ll play video games or read.

Speaking of reading, a popular series was adapted into a movie. Are you a big fan?

I’m a big “Hunger Games” fan. I haven’t seen it yet, and some of my friends have and let a few things slip now and then. I just hope the movie is as good as the books.

What’s your style of music?

I listen to anything country, and I have to say Brad Paisley is my favorite. I like the sound, and it relates to people more than any other music that’s on.
