Air Academy senior Andrea Rice not only won the 100 butterfly and 50 freestyle on a busy Saturday at the CSML meet at Cheyenne Mountain, she also helped the Kadets’ medley relay team take top honors as well.
“I wanted to go out with a bang,” said Rice, whose first name is pronounced “AHN-dree-uh.” It kind of hit me that I won’t be here next year.”
This weekend, Rice gets one more chance to swim as a prep athlete at the 4A state meet in Thornton.
“I would love to win the 100 butterfly and get a top three finish in the medley relay. Having three other teammates part of the race makes it even more special.”
If you weren’t swimming, what would you be doing?
I can’t imagine myself not swimming, but I used to do triathlons, so I guess I’d be doing that.
How excited are you for the upcoming Olympics in London?
I love the Olympics. The whole world, swimmers and non-swimmers, were watching Michael Phelps in Beijing. I’ll be in Europe in July before the Olympics, so we’ll be seeing everyone getting pumped over it.
What’s one thing you do to take your mind off swimming?
I really enjoy ceramics. I tend to lean toward non-functional pieces, like an octopus or a hand. I do enjoy bowls and mugs, but I like to work on decorative pieces.
Besides graduation, what’s another thing you’re looking forward to?
I’m getting into The Hunger Games. A lot of my friends, even my older brothers, are reading it. Hopefully, the movie does the book series justice.
What’s the story behind Tebowing at the podium after winning the medley relay?
That was a spur-of-the-moment thing. I turned to the other girls and said we needed to do this. Tim is such an inspiration to me. People know him not just as a quarterback, but as a guy who has a lot of faith.
Where will you be later this year when you start college?
I’m going to Grove City College in Pennsylvania. I visited last March and it has that old feel. Plus, I love the snow. I have two brothers who are both in medical school, and I do want to follow in their footsteps. I’d love to study the eyes, maybe be an ophthalmologist.
