ENGLEWOOD • Josh McDaniels promises that his starters won’t be sitting around tonight when the Denver Broncos finish the preseason against the Arizona Cardinals.
For many years, Broncos fans had little reason to care about the preseason finale because Mike Shanahan rested every key player. McDaniels said the starters will play tonight, although they won’t be in too long.
“Our guys are going to play,” McDaniels said. “They are not going to play into the second half or anything like that, but there are some things that we want to do better than what we have done.”
Many NFL veterans sit out the final preseason game, but the Broncos don’t have much choice. They also know there is a lot of work to do after an 0-3 start to the preseason.
“Whatever works,” receiver Brandon Stokley said. “Whatever Josh thinks is best for the team to get ready for Cincinnati, we’re going to do.”
Rookie running back Knowshon Moreno might not play. McDaniels said Moreno is probably capable of playing, but he hasn’t played since the preseason opener because of a knee injury and the Broncos will be careful with his return.
Even though suspended receiver Brandon Marshall won’t play tonight, he was a topic of conversation Wednesday.
Newsday in New York reported the Jets might be interested in trading for Marshall, but McDaniels emphatically shot down those rumors.
“There’s no discussions whatsoever taking place between the Denver Broncos and any team in the National Football League regarding Brandon Marshall,” McDaniels said. “We’re looking forward to having Brandon back on the 6th of September and starting our preparation for Cincinnati with him.”
