A look at Sunday's Broncos camp

FRANK SCHWAB Updated: August 16, 2009 at 12:00 am

ENGLEWOOD • After Friday’s three-interception performance, Denver Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton will be heavily scrutinized.
In Sunday’s practice, there was some good and bad. He threw nice deep passes on back-to-back plays to Eddie Royal, and then Brandon Stokley.
Shortly after those nice throws, Orton threw a deep interception to rookie safety David Bruton. He also threw a pass that should have been intercepted by safety Brian Dawkins early in the practice.
Orton did take all of his normal repetitions with the first-team offense.
Broncos coach Josh McDaniels said Orton did some good things against San Francisco.
“He certainly made a few mistakes we don’t want him to make and turning the ball over is never a good thing, but he also did plenty of good things on Friday night and ran the team effectively in a lot of ways,” McDaniels said.

HIGHLIGHTS AND LOWLIGHTS
There were very few changes in the depth chart on Sunday, after Friday’s preseason opener. … David Bruton, who filled in for Brian Dawkins with the starting defense for a few days in camp, moved to third-team safety when Dawkins returned. … Receiver Brandon Lloyd left practice early with an apparent injury.

QUOTABLE
“I didn’t read anything, so I don’t know how much heat he took.” – Broncos coach Josh McDaniels on if he thought Kyle Orton took too much heat for Friday’s performance. Last week, McDaniels criticized the media for reports he read on Ryan Harris’ injury.

WHAT’S NEXT
The Broncos have a pair of practices today. Their first session is 8:45 a.m., then they have an evening practice at 5:30 p.m.

FOCUSING ON
Jabar Gaffney, receiver. With Brandon Marshall back, Gaffney’s role will have to be redefined. Usually, on the first repetition of each drill, Marshall was with the starters, but Gaffney spelled him often. Brandon Stokley is seemingly locked into the slot receiver role, and Marshall and Eddie Royal are two top-notch starters.

“’We’re going to evaluate the quarterbacks just like we do like every other position,’ McDaniels said on July 27. ‘If Chris (Simms) is the most effective quarterback in our system by September, then he’ll start.’” For reports visit gazettebroncos.freedomblogging.com.
