For the third straight August, Air Force senior Luke Hyder has been moved across the line of scrimmage.
Hyder, who played Z receiver last season and was listed as the Falcons’ backup tailback heading into the preseason, was back at strong safety Monday when Air Force held its first practice.
“It’s nothing new,” said Hyder, who found out about the position change Sunday afternoon from coach Troy Calhoun. “I’ve been here before.”
Indeed, Hyder arrived at Air Force in 2006 as a tailback but was moved to strong safety in August of 2007. He played in all 13 games that season in a reserve role, then moved back to offense last August.
Now back on defense Hyder hopes to play in the Falcons’ nickel package, filling the role played by graduated safety Luke Yeager. At least that’s the plan for now.
“There’s a chance I bump back over,” to offense, Hyder said. “Our depth at tailback right now is kind of nonexistent. I told coach, I can come over, learn all this and if he wants to throw me back over in two weeks … it’s not something I’d really have to re-learn.
“I’m just happy to be out here. Either way, I’m going to give it all I’ve got.”
Junior Ben Cochran, a quarterback who took many of the snaps in the spring, also has been moved to safety. … Senior Anthony Hemphill, who was listed as the Falcons’ backup X receiver heading into camp, has left the program, sports information director Troy Garnhart said.
