The case: On Nov. 20, 2008, Colorado Springs Police were called to a home in the 1300 block of Lindenrose Grove on a report that a man had been stabbed to death by his son.

The victim: Dr. Edward M. Fitzgerald, 63, had been an orthopedic surgeon in Colorado Springs since 1978 and was a past president of the El Paso County Medical Society. Friends said he often volunteered his time, offering free services at an outreach clinic in La Junta and washing dishes at soup kitchens.

The suspect: The attorney for Sean Alden Fitzgerald, 37, has entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity. Fitzgerald suffered head injuries when he was hit by a truck while bicycling in Thailand a few weeks before the slaying. The day before the slaying, his parents brought him to a neurosurgeon because they said he was having paranoid and suicidal thoughts.

What's new: After a brief review Tuesday, the case was continued to June 23 in order to provide more time for a sanity evaluation of Fitzgerald.
