Students at Cañon City High School plan to participate in Wednesday's national walkout to join the discussion about ending school violence.
The walkout in Cañon City coincides with thousands across the United States and several planned around Colorado Springs on Wednesday.
After the Feb. 14 shooting in Parkland, Fla., victims of the shooting began speaking out, creating the national movement. CCHS student Alyssa Lopez said watching them act has inspired her to do the same.
Principal Bill Summers informed parents in a March 9 letter that at the students' request, CCHS will conduct an evacuation drill at 10 a.m. in a "safe and controlled" manner. Students will participate in 17 minutes of silence, which represents one minute for each victim of the Parkland shooting. No student will be forced to participate, Summers said.
Students from many parts of Colorado also will be participating in walkouts. Read more here at denverpost.com.
