A Kalamazoo, Mich., man is thankful to be alive after almost drowning at a South Haven beach, rescued by a total stranger and Air Force Academy graduate who jumped in at the first sign of trouble.
What began as a pleasant visit to South Beach for Bader Alsabaan ended with an underwater struggle to save his life.
"I was swimming faster and faster until, I go away from the beach," Alsabaan said.
He was trying to retrieve swim toys for a family when he became tired, went under water and never came back up.
Zach Provchy, a 2015 graduate of the Air Force Academy, saw it and sprang into action, relying on skills that he learned in water survival classes at the Academy.
"I look back on my time at the Academy and credit the instruction I received in the swimming/water survival classes at the Academy," Provchy said. "Had it not been for those two classes, I don't think I would have had the knowledge or the confidence to save a man's life."
