DENVER — Two Colorado dogs have tested positive for rabies, the first cases of the disease reported in canines in over a decade.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment said Monday that the dogs are both pets. One is from Weld County and the other is from Yuma County.

The last case of rabies in a dog in Colorado was in 2003 when a dog from Texas tested positive. Health officials say it's been over 40 years since a dog was exposed to and developed rabies within the state.

There have been 41 cases of rabies found in wild animals so far this year with a higher number of rabid skunks compared to last year.
