What does it mean to be a leader? Leadership Pikes Peak, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded in 1976, believes it means being a good steward to the community and its resources, empowering others to grow, defining and articulating community concerns, and forming effective responses to issues and needs with passion and authority. The organization’s mission is to build a thriving community through leadership services that engage, enrich, empower and connect the Pikes Peak region.
The Leadership Pikes Peak Gala is being held on Friday, May 12 from 6 to 10 p.m. at The Antlers Hotel, and will honor those leaders, or community trustees, throughout the region that make compassionate, bold moves for the sake of a better tomorrow for all. The evening is also the organization’s largest fundraiser of the year and will feature a live auction – in addition to a delicious sit-down dinner catered by The Antlers Hotel.
Awards for 2016 include:
- Emerging Leader Award, which honors a Leadership Pikes Peak alumni under the age of 35 who positively impacts their community through their professional and volunteer efforts.
- Community Inspiration Leadership Award (Volunteer Leadership), which honors a Leadership Pikes Peak Alumni who consistently makes every effort to go above and beyond as a community volunteer for the Pikes Peak region.
- Modeling the Way Community Leadership Award (Professional Leadership), which honors a Leadership Pikes Peak alumni whose leadership in their professional career has motivated their colleagues, friends, family and/or community members to get involved.
- Makepeace Community Trustee Award, which honors an individual (does not need to be a Leadership Pikes Peak alumni) whose consistent community leadership has created a long-lasting legacy that spans beyond the Pikes Peak region. This highest accolade is named after the organization’s former Executive Director, and Mayor, Mary Lou Makepeace.
The theme for this year is “Leadership through the Decades,” and will highlight four Leadership Pikes Peak alumni from each decade that the nonprofit has been in effect. “It will be great to hear from our alumni from the 70s, 80s and 90s, in addition to recent graduates,” says Hillary Reed, PhD, Executive Director of Leadership Pikes Peak. Attendees are encouraged to get in the spirit by wearing their favorite decade’s cocktail attire. The event is open to the public, and expected to sell out as it has in years past. Those interested are encouraged to register as soon as possible at LeadershipPikesPeak.org/Gala. “The Leadership Pikes Peak Gala is a fun night for alumni and the public, and we are excited to celebrate with our community,” says Reed.
Leadership Pikes Peak offers civic engagement and community leadership programs year-round to individuals of all ages who are looking to take that extra step toward effective leadership for their own growth and for the growth of their community. Students are exposed to issues and challenges across a range of industries throughout the Pikes Peak region; and are given guidance about the ways that those challenges can be addressed. Upon completion of the program, graduates receive a certificate and earn the title of Community Trustee.
