DURANGO — Police say the driver of a semitrailer carrying cattle that overturned in southwestern Colorado has been charged with reckless driving.

The Durango Herald reports (http://bit.ly/1OcKYSS ) that Police Sgt. Rita Warfield says driver Travis Phillips didn't appear intoxicated at the scene of Sunday's crash at a major intersection in Durango. The reckless driving charge could carry a fine of $50 to $1,000.

Ranchers joined emergency crews to help round up about 80 cattle. Warfield says three of the animals died.

Phillips was driving to Kansas, where he lives. A rancher who saw the crash says Phillips was driving erratically on U.S. Highway 160 before his brakes went out.

After the crash, Phillips cited several problems to the newspaper, including failures of the clutch, brakes and power steering in no clear order.
