Physical and mental health needs of people in El Paso County are served by private and public institutions, as well as doctors and therapists in private practice. Here's a rundown of some of the major medical providers in the area and the nonprofits that treat uninsured, underinsured and Medicaid/Medicare patients:

MEMORIAL HOSPITAL

This system, part of University of Colorado Health, has a campus downtown and in Briargate and operates several clinics throughout the area. Combined, the hospitals have 564 hospital beds, as well as emergency room exam rooms. Memorial Hospital Central has a Level II trauma center, an urgent care center and primary care locations. Memorial Hospital Central also has the only pediatric intensive care unit and level III neonatal intensive care unit in southern Colorado. Memorial Hospital Central: 1400 E. PENROSE-ST. FRANCIS HEALTH SERVICES

A nonprofit, faith-based health care system, Penrose- St. Francis operates two hospitals, one just north of downtown and the other at Powers Boulevard and Woodmen Road, with a combined 559 beds. The system also has several other operations, including urgent care centers. For eight years running, it has been the only Colorado system to make the list of America's Top 50 hospitals, as determined by Healthgrades, an independent health care ratings organization. Penrose-St. Francis is part of Centura Health, jointly sponsored by Catholic Health Initiatives and the Adventist Health System. Penrose Hospital: 2222 N. PEAK VISTA COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTERS

Peak Vista's outpatient health centers provide medical, dental and behavioral health care for uninsured, underinsured and low-income residents, and they also accept people who are on Medicaid, Medicare, Tricare and many private insurers and offer care on a sliding-fee scale. Peak Vista serves more than 82,500 people a year. Locations: throughout the Pikes Peak region and the eastern plains. Details: 632-5700, peakvista.org.

SET FAMILY MEDICAL CLINICS

SET - which stands for service, empowerment, transformation - is a nonprofit organization that provides basic medical services and holistic health programs to uninsured, underinsured and homeless people, along with Medicaid enrollees. SET (2864 S. Circle Drive, Suite 450) operates family, homeless and immunization clinics. Details: 776-8850, setofcs.org.

AGEWELL MEDICAL ASSOCIATES

Formerly called Colorado Springs Senior Medicine, this medical provider serves people ages 60 and older - including those on Medicare or Secure Horizons plans. New Medicare patients are being accepted. In 2012, the operation moved to a new office location (2350 International Circle) that greatly increased its space, enabling it to add providers and increase its patient load. ASPENPOINTE

This nonprofit offers a wide range of services related to behavioral health, substance abuse and overall personal wellness, including career development. It manages the Crisis Stabilization Unit, a facility open to walk-in consultations 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The facility, at 115 S. Parkside Drive, aims to help people in a mental health or substance abuse crisis. Medicaid, Medicare Part B, Tricare and many private insurers accepted. Details: 572-6100, AspenPointe.org.

EL PASO COUNTY PUBLIC HEALTH

The health department (1675 W. Garden of the Gods Road, Suite 2044) provides services for uninsured and underinsured people, as well as Medicaid enrollees. Services include preventive health screenings for early cancer detection; pregnancy tests; diagnosis and treatment for sexually transmitted infections; reproductive health services; immunizations; water testing; tuberculosis testing; nutritional education and food vouchers for pregnant women and their children ages 5 and younger. General hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, though some programs, such as birth and death records, are open from 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. Details: 578-3199, elpasocountyhealth.org.

OPEN BIBLE MEDICAL

This Christian-based nonprofit organization (824 S. Union Blvd.) provides free medical care for those who are uninsured and low income. Its clinic accepts walk-ins from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and can schedule appointments on the second and fourth Thursdays of every month. Details: 475-0972, openbiblemedical.org.

MISSION MEDICAL CLINIC

A faith-based, nonprofit organization (2125 E. LaSalle St.) that provides primary care, vision, dental and behavioral health services to uninsured, underinsured and low-income people. Hours vary between clinics. Details: 219-3402, missionmedical clinic.org.

TLC PHARMACY

A nonprofit that provides prescription medications to uninsured and low-income patients. TLC (555 E. Costilla St.) is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Details: 596-4449, tlcpharmacy.org

PIKES PEAK REGIONAL HOSPITAL
