A 22-year-old man died Thursday when his motorcycle was struck by an SUV in west Colorado Springs, Colorado State Patrol said.

Nicholas R. Uberecken, of Colorado Springs, was pronounced dead at the scene of a wreck that shut down all westbound lanes of U.S. 24 and all southbound lanes of 31st Street for about three hours, state patrol said.

Uberecken's 1984 Honda Magna motorcycle was traveling westbound on the left lane of U.S. 24 about 5:40 a.m., when an eastbound 2009 Ford Escape, driven by 47-year-old Joe Sevilla of Manitou Springs, turned north onto 31st Street directly in the path of the motorcycle, according to the state patrol.

Sevilla was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured in the crash, state patrol said.

Sevilla had not been cited or ticketed pending an active investigation. State patrol said alcohol and speed were not considered factors in the wreck.
