And then there were two.
The Blockbuster Video store at 3141 W. Colorado Ave. on the west side of Colorado Springs began a liquidation sale this week and is scheduled to close in May. That leaves two Blockbuster stores in the Springs — 3790 E. Woodmen Road and 6530 S. Academy Blvd. A spokesperson for Blockbuster said Thursday there are no plans to close those stores.
The Pikes Peak region was home to 18 Blockbuster stores less than 10 years ago, but the number has steadily dwindled as the chain has dealt with changing customer habits, growing competition and bankruptcy. Dish Network, which bought the chain in 2011, closed about 500 Blockbuster stores last year and announced plans in January to close another 300 in the U.S., leaving about 500 stores nationwide. A store in Falcon, north of Colorado Springs, closed earlier this year.
