Post offices plan to cut weekday hours

The United States Postal Service is cutting back, and that means no more early-morning hours in Colorado Springs.

Starting Monday, Colorado Springs post offices will open no earlier than 9 a.m. Mondays through Fridays. That’s a change of as much as an hour and a half for some locations.

Some post offices will close earlier, too. Most Saturday hours will stay the same, including those that open before 9 a.m., said postal service spokesman David Rupert.

The goal is to become a more efficient business that still meets its customers’ needs, he said.

Studies of customer traffic to post office retail locations, where stamps are sold and packages shipped, showed cutting morning hours wouldn’t be a serious detriment to customers, Rupert said.

“We’re a branch of the government that’s trying to be efficient,” Rupert said. “We looked at our traffic patterns and we didn’t have the volume of people coming in the morning, so like any good business, we looked at that and we found that we could open at 9 and still serve our customers well.”

The new hours are all part of attempts to keep the the Postal Service alive amid a 25 percent decline in first-class mail during the past six years, Rupert said.

The Postal Service is even older than the country it serves, he said, and it’s doing its best to cut costs with minimal impact to employees and the services people rely on.

“It was founded in 1775,” Rupert said. “This is something that’s important. It was laid down in the Constitution and we’re doing everything we can to preserve it.”
