El Paso County parks will receive nearly $300,000 in Great Outdoors Colorado grants to repair damage to two popular recreational areas caused by last year's flooding.

Most of that sum - $200,000 - will go toward repairing 5.7 miles of trail, a pedestrian bridge and 3.7 acres of land in Bear Creek Regional Park. The park was damaged when Bear and Fountain creeks rose to historic levels.

Roughly $100,000 will be used to clear debris in Harlan Wolfe Park and to replace a century-old building within the park that was "damaged beyond repair" with a new outdoor classroom and pavilion, according to a news release.

The aid is part of $13 million in flood recovery grants distributed to El Paso, Boulder, Jefferson, Larimer, Morgan and Weld counties.

Great Outdoors Colorado is funded by Colorado Lottery proceeds to help preserve the state's parks, trails, wildlife, rivers and open spaces. It receives no tax dollars.
