Postcards from spring break: Widefield brakes for amusement park

After absorbing a 10-3 loss to Thunderbird (Ariz.) on the final day of the Greenway Festival in suburban Phoenix, Widefield's players found a way to unwind at a local amusement park.

For longtime coach John Sanchez, however, he was busy making sure everything would be ready for the team's early-morning departure back to southern Colorado.

"We'll leave early in the morning, and hopefully make it home by dinner time," Sanchez said. "We have to get ready to go into league against Harrison on Tuesday."

The Gladiators went 0-4 in the tournament, but Sanchez knows his team won't dwell on the final scores and will use the experiences to motivate them in Class 4A Colorado Springs Metro League play.

"I think this week, they definitely got schooled in how baseball is played," Sanchez said. "We're going to take back a lot of baseball knowledge. We made some mistakes, but I think they'll put it together when they get back."
