Police were hunting for a robber who a witness said tried early Saturday to hold up a Diamond Shamrock convenience store at 5670 Palmer Park Blvd.

Police say the clerk was outside the store around 3 a.m., emptying trash, when he was approached by masked robber who asked him to go back inside the store to get money.

The clerk said the robber had something shiny, but unidentified, object in hand. The clerk fled across the street to call police. The robber then broke into the store by smashing the unlocked glass door but failed to open the cash register, police said in a news release.

Police used tracking dogs in a bid to find the robber, who wore black, but came up empty.
