Gazette Premium Content Sheriff investigating Widefield death as homicide

Garrison Wells Updated: February 15, 2013 at 12:00 am

The death of a man whose body was found Wednesday in his Widefield home is being investigated as a homicide, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said Friday.

The victim was identified as 47-year-old Miguel Barajas.

Barajas is the father of Dawn Richburg, the woman who called the sheriff’s department about 7:20 p.m. Wednesday and said when she arrived home the door was open. She told authorities that she did not go inside the home in the 100 block of Judson Street.

No other details of the killing were released.

Richburg declined comment earlier this week.

“Detectives are working hard to determine who may have been involved with Mr. Barajas’ death and the theft of property items from inside the home,” a Friday news release said.

The sheriff’s office is asking anyone with information to call 390-5555.

“Any information may prove valuable in solving the case and could consist of things as simple as local residents remembering suspicious vehicles or people they saw in or around the area on the date of this crime,” the release said.

The crime is unusual in this normally quiet area, neighbors said.

“This is the first time anything like that has happened here,” said John Deutsch, 79, who lives a few doors down.

He and his wife, Joan, 75, have lived in their house for 48 years.

“It’s a very quiet area,” she said.
