Two military members assigned to Schriever Air Force Base died in a head-on collision that may have been caused when a vehicle swerved to avoid a couch on the road at the intersection of Marksheffel Road and Colorado 94, east of Colorado Springs.
The crash happened at 6 a.m. when a silver vehicle with two men, reportedly wearing Air Force fatigues, drove into the westbound lanes and collided with a burgundy GMC Sierra pickup traveling west, Colorado Springs police said.
The men in the silver vehicle died upon impact, and the pickup driver suffered a broken leg, for which he underwent surgery. Police said he was listed in stable condition and his injuries were non-life threatening.
Schriever's public affairs office released a statement confirming the two men who died were active duty military personnel and said their names would not be released until their families were notified.
"Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of the two individuals," stated Col. William Liquori, 50th Space Wing commander, in the news release. "The loss of life pains Team Schriever deeply. We will do everything we can to support the family and friends in their time of need."
Police investigators said the intersection was closed until 10:30 a.m. while they gathered evidence and re-enacted the wreck to determine what happened.
