Staff reports Updated: February 8, 2013 at 12:00 am

A 71-year-old woman was sexually assaulted late Thursday after a man broke into her home on East Boulder Street and knocked a gun from her hand, Colorado Springs police said Friday.

The woman told police she was watching television about 10:15 p.m. when she noticed a person looking through her bedroom window. She got a handgun and was standing in a hallway when the man burst through her door, knocked the gun from her hand and threw her to the floor, police said.

She was assaulted and then the attacker grabbed her gun and demanded her wallet, which had about $100 in cash, police said. The attacker told the victim he was homeless and he took a double-sized comforter from her sofa as he fled the home, police said.

The attacker was described as a clean-shaven black man in his mid-20s with short-cropped hair. He is about 6-feet tall with medium build, police said.

The suspect was wearing a one-piece, tan jumpsuit that could possibly be a Carhartt-style set of overalls, police said. He was also wearing tan work boots.
