Highlights from Friday night's high school sports scene around the Pikes Peak region.

Cheyenne Mountain def. Doherty 25-20, 25-23, 26-24

At Cheyenne Mountain: Pikes Peak region 4A No. 2 Cheyenne Mountain handed 5A No. 1 Doherty just its second loss in its past 41 matches.

Led by Maddie Beal's 17 kills and Mika Dickson's 15 digs, the Indians (10-1 overall, 1-0 Pikes Peak Athletic Conference) won their ninth straight match to keep pace with Lewis-Palmer, Air Academy and Falcon atop the PPAC.

It wasn't just another ordinary win inside Cheyenne Mountain High School.

"This was a huge win for us," Cheyenne Mountain coach David Barkley said. "They are the best, if not one of the best 5A teams in the state and we beat them tonight on a complete team effort."

The Spartans (10-2) fell flat for the first time since they bumbled away their 38-consecutive win streak in a loss to Lakewood at the Cherry Creek Tournament on Sept. 14. Since then, Tara Hittle's team grabbed back-to-back wins over 5A Chatfield and 4A powerhouse Lewis-Palmer.

On Friday, the Indians were down 24-21 in the third game, before rallying for five points to complete the sweep.

Barkley said the Indians were able to close games by "reducing production" from last year's Gazette 5A volleyball player of the year Haleigh Washington, who had 26 kills, six digs and three blocks, as well as Gazette first-team selection Gabby Simpson, who added just five kills and 28 assists.

"That's all you can do with those two," Barkley said. "You just try to reduce their production by a little to give yourself a shot."

Rampart 12, Palmer Ridge 8

At Palmer Ridge: Kara Jones led an offensive onslaught, going 3-for-4 hitting with four RBIs, three runs, a double and her second home run of the season, as 5A No. 1 Rampart (14-2, 3-0 5A CSML) won a shootout over 4A and below No. 2 Palmer Ridge (12-5, 4-2 Pikes Peak Athletic Conference) to grab its 12th win in a row.

Kelli Warmouth also stayed red hot in the win, extending her multihit game streak to four after she went 4 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs.

The Rams outhit the Bears 16-12 as starting pitcher Alyssa McDowell, who has started every inning of every game for Rampart, out-dueled Palmer Ridge's Madysen Kearns.

In the PPAC, the Bears are in a battle for second place behind Discovery Canyon (12-5, 7-0) which finished league play unscathed Friday.

In the 5A CSML, Rampart leads Pine Creek (13-3, 2-0) by half a game.

Discovery Canyon 4, Sand Creek 0

At Sand Creek: Thanks to McKenzie Surface's seventh complete-game shutout of the season, Discovery Canyon (12-5, 7-0 PPAC) finished league play perfect.

The Thunder's pitching staff proved to be the catalyst as Discovery Canyon beat league competitors by a scoring margin of 42-12 in seven games.

Friday, Sand Creek (4-13, 1-5) was held to three hits.

Falcon 15, Cheyenne Mountain 4

At Falcon: Madison Whorton and Mirando Dolsman both hit home runs, Laci Lashley pitched her way out of trouble and Falcon (8-8, 4-2 PPAC) used an eight-run first inning to cruise past Cheyenne Mountain (7-9, 2-4).

Sierra Leon added a three-run double and Lexi Manyik went 3 for 3 with two RBIs to help push the Falcons' win streak to four games.

The Indians have lost seven of their last nine.

Canon City 3, Pueblo East 2

At Canon City: Michael Mann scored his team-leading 10th goal of the season, Jordan Holand added his first goal of the season and Canon City (6-4 overall, 4-3 4A South Central) survived a scare from a struggling Pueblo East team (1-9, 1-6).

Billy Stopka also had a goal and Steven Ortega had two assists for the Tigers.

Cross Country

Thornton Invitational

At Thornton: Vista Ridge freshman Ashlyn Polk took second in the girls' race at 18 minutes, 43 seconds, and teammate Seth Woodring finished sixth in the boys' division at 17:13.

The Wolves took second in the boys' division and fourth in the girls' division.
