Gazette Premium Content Prep football capsules for Week 5

PEYTON (2-2) at CSCS (2-2)

7 p.m. Thursday, Mountain Lion Stadium at UCCS (Four Diamonds Sports Complex)

Last week: Peyton lost to Custer County, 30-27. CSCS lost at Rye, 27-14

The skinny: Both teams enter 1-1 in 1A Black Forest League play. Peyton depends heavily on the run, with quarterback Tyler Lashley (359 yards, six TDs) and RB Zack Kearse (291 yards, four TDs) leading the way. CSCS has aired it out behind freshman QB Justin Engesser, who has completed 22 of 32 passes for 282 yards. TJ Stockton has rushed for five TDs.

 

FALCON (4-0) at SAND CREEK (4-0)

7 p.m. Friday, Sand Creek High School

Last week: Falcon outscored Rampart, 58-32. Sand Creek shut down Liberty, 35-0.

The skinny: Powerful offenses with dynamic game-changing players clash in this Pikes Peak League showdown. Falcon's Kalen Ballage has 12 TDs (eight rush, two receive and two returns) to go with 1,137 all-purpose yards, or 284.3 per game. Sand Creek QB Micheal DeCarmo has accounted for 18 TDs (11 rush, seven pass) and 1,208 combined yards (302 per game).

 

FLORENCE (3-1) at MANITOU SPRINGS (4-0)

7 p.m. Friday, Manitou Springs High School

Last week: Florence downed Alamosa, 44-20. Manitou blanked St. Mary's, 42-0.

The skinny: Since moving to 2A from 3A prior to the 2008 season, Florence is 37-1 in Tri-Peaks League play. Huskies QB Zach Hoxie leads the way with 593 rushing yards and 305 passing with seven total TDs. Manitou RB Morgan Burnell has rushed for 429 yards and seven TDs. The Mustangs are plus-11 in turnover ratio, losing the ball just once.

 

CANON CITY (3-1) at PUEBLO CENTENNIAL (4-0)

7 p.m. Friday, Pueblo Centennial High School

Last week: Canon City held off Mesa Ridge, 32-29. Centennial beat Cheyenne Mountain, 35-6.

The skinny: Canon City, on a three-game winning streak, will hope to stop Centennial RB Quincy Kindred, who leads all of 4A with 827 yards and 14 TDs. Last year, Centennial went 3-7 in its return to 4A after four seasons in 3A, blowing a late 13-0 lead at Canon City and dropping a 14-13 heartbreaker. Tigers receiver Logun Javernick has a team-high 14 receptions for 245 yards and a score.

 

VALOR CHRISTIAN (3-1) at FOUNTAIN-FORT CARSON (2-2)

7 p.m. Friday, Guy R. Barickman Stadium (at Fountain-Fort Carson High School)

Last week: Valor beat Legend, 48-10. Fountain-Fort Carson defeated Palmer, 25-0.

The skinny: Colorado's best high school team heads south to play a Fountain-Fort Carson team that has won two straight, thanks to a re-energized rushing attack led by senior Drue Harris, who has 349 yards and five TDs in the span. Valor's only loss came Sept.?7 against a powerhouse Bingham (Utah) squad. The Eagles depend on their incredible balance, led by RB Christian McCaffrey (545 rushing yards and 10 total TDs) and QB A.J. Cecil (624 passing yards with nine TDs).
