Police ramp up at dangerous intersections

Under the theory that more cops equal less crashes, the Colorado Springs Police Department’s Specialized Enforcement Division’s Motors Unit will be making appearances at the city’s more dangerous intersections.

That includes the intersection at Austin Bluffs Parkway and Academy Boulevard and several intersections on Academy and Powers Boulevard, said Barbara Miller, spokeswoman for the Colorado Springs Police Department.

“Drivers should expect to see small teams of motor officers working these intersections,” Miller said in a press release.

Officers will also aggressively pursue violators, she said.

The two most cited infractions are running red lights and vehicles improperly turning left. However, officers also will be looking for distracted drivers and speeders, the release said.

The police department used to release a list of the most dangerous intersections but stopped doing that in 2011.

Intersections that were previously listed as dangerous by police on Academy include East Platte Avenue, Austin Bluffs, East Fountain Boulevard and East Pikes Peak Avenue.
