Richard Andrade risked his life to save another.
On March 16, Andrade was at a construction site where a crew was removing asbestos. After someone apparently turned the power on, a worker touched a low-hanging wire, shocking the man and prompting him to grab a line. The amount of electricity prevented the man from letting go.
“When Richard saw what was happening, he tackled the man and broke the connection, saving the man’s life,” the Colorado Springs Fire Department said. “At great risk to himself, Richard displayed courage and initiative.”
Andrade, who was burned in the lifesaving incident, received a Citizen Heroism award Friday from the fire department. He was among several community members, firefighters and civilian employees honored for their “acts of heroism, service and response beyond the call of duty” last year.
Battalion Chief Jim Schanel, a 26-year veteran, won the Firefighter of the Year award.
Fire Chief Rich Brown said Schanel has been the “cornerstone” of the department’s wildland program since its inception in 1989.
Last year, Schanel was named structure protection specialist for the Rocky Mountain Type 1 Incident Management Team. Brown said 2012 was especially challenging for the team because of the number of big fires in the country.
“Two of these major incidents occurred in Colorado,” including the Waldo Canyon fire in Colorado Springs, Brown said. “During these incidents, Jim’s ability to take action helped ensure the safety of personnel working in the danger area and helped lead firefighters that saved hundreds of homes.”
“My efforts really pale in comparison to people in this room,” Schanel said. “Waldo really was an effort of police, fire and our mutual aid partners ... I’m really humbled. I don’t know what to say.”
Representatives from every station in the city were recognized for their work battling the June 23 Waldo Canyon fire that destroyed 346 homes. The department will celebrate Waldo work again on June 28.
