Gazette Premium Content Air Force guard transferring from men's basketball team after one season

by BRENT BRIGGEMAN The Gazette - Published: July 8, 2013

Guard Cameron Michael has left the Air Force basketball team, The Gazette learned on Monday.

Falcons coach Dave Pilipovich confirmed the news, saying the military aspect is what ultimately led Michael to change courses as he was about to begin his sophomore year.

"He's a good kid and obviously he was going to be a good player, but you've got to want to do the military," Pilipovich said. "We all say that, but it really comes down to the question of, is this something you really want to do? You're talking about four years here and five years afterward. The lifestyle and commitment, once he put it all down I think he said, 'Maybe this is not me.'

"Unfortunately, we'd love to have him, but those things happen."

Cadets can opt out of the school without penalty until the completion of their sophomore year.

Michael averaged 4.1 points while seeing action in 21 games as a freshman. His scoring average was tops among non-seniors.

Michael scored 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting in a 72-56 loss to UNLV in the first round of the Mountain West Tournament. He scored 33 combined points in lopsided early season victories over Division II opponents Western State and Regis.

The 6-foot-5 guard, who averaged 20 points as a senior at Loveland before attending the Air Force prep school, shot 45 percent from 3-point range and figured to be a regular part of the rotation in 2013-14 as the Falcons look to replace several perimeter shooters.

Michael's departure will likely mean an extended role for Max Yon at an off-guard position. Pilipovich expects contributions at the guard positions from his incoming freshman class, though he won't know specifics on the personnel until the completion of basic training.
