Gazette Premium Content Deputies arrest pair in Black Forest metal thefts

By Matt Steiner Updated: July 5, 2013 at 1:34 pm

A pair of alleged metal thieves were arrested Monday after a traffic stop coincided with a report by a resident that scrap metal had been stolen from his Black Forest home.

Dominique Smith, 23, and Phillip Madden, 26, were taken to the El Paso County jail on suspicion of theft and criminal trespass after El Paso County deputies had pulled them over just after 10 a.m. Monday near Black Forest Road and McFerran Road.

Investigators were able to link the license plates on the Dodge truck that the men occupied to surveillance footage taken at the home of the resident reporting the scrap metal crime. The investigation also showed that items inside the truck belonged to the Black Forest resident and another person who lived nearby.

Madden was also booked at the El Paso County jail on an unrelated warrant, a Sheriff's spokesman said. Both he and Smith bonded out of jail.
