BOULDER — Colorado State University alumnus Jeremy Freed repeated his 2011 victory at the Bolder Boulder 10K citizen's race on Monday, outdueling 40-year-old Australian veteran Lee Troop, who finished third.

Freed, 25, racing for Newton Running Company, finished in 30 minutes, 57.60 seconds after making a move around the fifth mile, gapping 25-year-old Brandon Birdsong of Colorado Springs, who finished second, and Troop. Freed last year competed for Colorado in the elite race, but bumped down to the citizen's race this year after a hard-to-diagnose knee injury left him sidelined since October.

Troop paced the group early in the race, just six weeks after running the Boston Marathon.

"You know he's going to pace you correctly," Freed said of Troop. "You know he's going to find those tangents in the course really well. He's just a really good guy to key off of."

Romanian-born Lidia Simon, 39, of Boulder, was the first female finisher in 34:04.59, finishing 46th overall. Simon has a long history of running success: She won the Bolder Boulder elite race in 1999, before winning silver in the Olympic Marathon in 2000 while representing Romania, one of five times she competed in the Olympics. In 2012, she won the Osaka, Japan, marathon and the Denver Marathon in 2011.
