A motorcycle crash killed a 27-year-old Colorado Springs man near Austin Bluffs Parkway and Rangewood Drive Saturday evening.

The motorcyclist, who was not identified, was apparently riding at a high rate of speed on Rangewood Drive when the motorcycle struck a tree and he was thrown, police Lt. Brian Ritz said.

The rider, who wasn't wearing a helmet, suffered head trauma. Despite work of two nurses, who stopped to help after seeing the crash, the man's injuries proved fatal. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The wreck happened near a Walgreens store and drew a throng of bystanders. The motorcycle came to rest in the eastbound lanes of Rangewood. Its lights were still flashing an hour after the crash.

A stretch of Rangewood was closed from Saddle Rock Avenue to Austin Bluffs as the department's Major Accident Unit was investigated.

Officers expected to be at the crash site for several hours.
