Colorado Springs

Wildflowers can be spotted in Garden of the Gods and along local trails, although generally not in the expansive fields found in alpine meadows. Rock Island Trail is a relatively short bike path that sometimes offers variety in blooms. Accessible from several spots, the trail connects to the Pikes Peak Greenway. springsgov.com/page.aspx?navid=2293

Roxborough State Park

The park southwest of Denver covers 3,329 acres. Willow Creek Trail is a 1.4-mile loop known for wildflowers, although the two dozen or so varieties common to the park can be spotted all over. Roxborough is close enough to Denver to combine with a visit to Chatfield, part of the Denver Botanic Garden sites. parks.state.co.us/parks/roxborough

Denver Botanic Gardens

There's always something to see at this fabulous stop on York Street - including wildflowers. In the Wildflower Treasures garden, containers are dedicated to different mountains, plateaus or regions. You won't be disappointed that you visited. There are also two satellite locations to explore. botanicgardens.org

American Basin

The San Juan Mountains offer several wildflower hot spots popular with hikers and photographers. This area near Cinnamon Pass and Handies Peak is among the more popular. The American Basin trail leads to Sloan Lake. Grizzly Gulch trail climbs Handies Peak, for sights beyond alpine flower-filled meadows. tinyurl.com/ctqa8bv

Crested Butte

This mountain town is considered the wildflower capital of the state. There are many scenic drives in the region, but the best view of the blooms will be on foot, hiking one of the many trails. The annual festival is July 8-14, but hikes are planned throughout summer. The festival website offers an ongoing bloom report. crestedbuttewildflowerfestival.com
