Two suspects involved in a stabbing and attempted robbery early Tuesday morning are claiming self-defense, leaving it up to Colorado Springs police to figure out what really happened.
Police say they responded to a stabbing in the area of Cimarron Street and El Paso Street around 12:19 a.m.
Daniel Julian Valdez, 50, reported that an unknown suspect had asked him for money. Upon trying to flee, Valdez claimed, he fell and the alleged robber stabbed him in the chest. Valdez said he armed himself with a 2x4 board and swung at the suspect in self-defense.
At 12:45 a.m., officers responded to a 911 call from a man who said he was assaulted by an unknown suspect who struck him in the head with a wooden board. When police arrived at the 1000 block of S. Chelton Road, the man told them he was attacked by two men, one armed with a knife and one with a board. The caller told officers he stabbed the board-wielding man in self-defense and disarmed his companion.
Police said both men were taken to Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
No arrests have been made and police confirmed the investigation is ongoing.
