A man was jailed on investigation of attempted murder after a Saturday night assault left a woman and her 9-month-old child injured.

Police say they were called to the intersection of Oro Blanco and North Carefree Circle in northeastern Colorado Springs just before 10 p.m. on reports of a domestic disturbance.

Officers say when they arrived they found the woman and the infant with serious, but not life-threatening, injuries. With the mother and child was a 9-year-old girl identified as the woman’s younger sister.

Police say the three were riding in a truck with 29-year-old Mark Burch when the woman and Burch began arguing. Officers said the woman demanded to be let out of the truck and Burch didn’t comply until he pulled into a dirt lot. Police say Burch forced the woman and the infant out of the truck. The 9-year-old ran for help.

Police say Burch choked the woman until she was unconscious. She awoke on the ground underneath the running truck, with the bleeding infant beside her.

She pulled the infant from under the vehicle and escaped before Burch took off in the truck.

The infant was hospitalized with a fractured skull.

Police later found Burch and arrested him on investigation of attempted murder and child abuse. He was held in the El Paso County jail Sunday.
