Colorado Springs police recovered two stolen cars after officers stopped to help a stranded motorist on Nevada Avenue late Saturday.

Police spotted the stalled car near the intersection of Nevada Avenue and Arvada Street just before 11 p.m. and stopped to help.

But as they came up to offer assistance, the two driver of the stranded car sprinted away. Police quickly checked the plate on the Honda and discovered it had been reported as stolen.

Officers rushed to the neighborhood and a police dog picked up the runaway driver’s scent. He was found hiding nearby.

Officers arrested 23-year-old Daniel Garcia on suspicion of car theft and wound up with an unexpected bonus.

Police say the investigation into Garcia led them to a second car, also stolen.

Garcia was held in the El Paso County jail pending the filing of formal charges.
