Gazette Premium Content Falcons rally for tie in third period

ANCHORAGE, Alaska. • Chad Demers’s goal 1 minute, 18 seconds into the third period earned Air Force a 3-3 tie against Alaska-Fairbanks to open the season in the first round of the Kendall Hockey Classic at Sullivan Arena in Anchorage, Alaska.

In the tournament format the game went to a shootout, where Fairbanks won 2-1.

Scott Holm made a centering pass from the right side to Demers in the slot, where the sophomore netted it.

The Falcons (0-0-1) will face host Alaska-Anchorage on Saturday at 9:07 p.m.

The Falcons fell behind midway through the second period on a turnover deep in their own end. Fairbanks’ Nik Yaremchuk scored his second goal of the game for a 3-2 lead.

“We did some things well and we need to improve on some things too,” Falcons coach Frank Serratore said. “... We came from behind twice in the game and you have to be able to do that if you aspire to be a champion. There are some things we need to improve, but this is something we can build on.”

The two teams combined for four goals on 14 shots in the first period.

UAF (0-0-1) outshot Air Force, 26-18.

In the classic format, the team with the best record will be crowned champion. If two or more teams are tied for the best record, a tiebreaker formula will determine the champion.
