State investigators join murder investigation at prison

Staff reports Updated: September 25, 2012 at 12:00 am

Colorado Bureau of Investigation crime analysts are working with investigators with the state Inspector General's Office to determine which inmate or inmates killed one sergeant and seriously injured a second at a prison in Ordway, officials say.

"Today, 24 hours later, we are a system grieving and in mourning," DOC spokeswoman Alison Morgan said of the murder at Arkansas Valley Correctional Facility on Monday. "We are focusing on a criminal investigation."

Sgt. Lori Gann, who has worked at the facility since 2009, remains hospitalized in critical condition at Parkview Medical Center in Pueblo on Tuesday, Morgan said.

"Her injuries were serious," she said. "Her family is with her."

The name of the deceased sergeant, who was supervising inmate kitchen staff preparing breakfast, has not yet been released.

Morgan said the murder and assault was an isolated event, not part of a larger institutional incident.
