Colorado Springs police are investigating the shooting death of a 35-year-old man, killed early Sunday outside a south-side bar.

Family members identified the victim as Kevin McCray, father of three children. McCray’s father declined to comment further about his son Sunday.

Police were called to the 2 Dog Tavern, 3113 S. Academy Blvd. about 1:40 a.m. Sunday and found the man there with multiple gunshot wounds.

Police say he was unresponsive and taken to Memorial Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. If ruled a homicide, McCray’s death would be the 16th homicide in Colorado Springs this year. There had been 19 homicides by the same time in 2011.

Police are searching for the possible shooter who they say is 25 to 30 years old, bald and about 5-feet-8 inches tall. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans and possibly driving a dark green 90s car with dark tinted windows.

Outside the bar Sunday morning, police had taped off a large section of the parking lot in front of the bar and were working to extract a bullet from a column outside a nearby church. They also oversaw a white car being towed away from the scene.

The bar is in a strip mall between a beauty supply store and a soul food restaurant.

Khaled Alhadad has worked at Beauty Depot Plus, which his mother owns, for eight years.

“A lot of problems started when that bar came here,” Alhadad said. He said customers are sometimes scared or uncomfortable when coming to the shop in the evening.

There were several people at the bar when the shooting happened, police say, and officers are looking for anyone with information. They can call police at 444-7000, or to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers at 634-7867.
