A local map store is offering discounted rates on topographical maps of the Waldo Canyon fire area for firefighters or anyone involved in the firefighting efforts.

MacVan Map Company, 929 West Colorado Ave., has maps that show right where fire is active. The store is packing in inventory, hauling maps from Denver to meet demand.

“These maps show the terrain, which is really important” said Bob Stanley, distribution manager for the company. “They’re going to be walking around it,” he said of the firefighters.

They are selling five different maps that may help.

The first is the U.S. Geological Survey 7.5 paper map that shows Waldo, Williams and Queen’s Canyons. McVan Map Co. will sell it to firefighters for $4.80. Another federal map of the area east of the fire can be had for the same price.

The business also offers the Pikes Peak Atlas by Robert Ormes and Robert Houdeck, a National Geographic Trails Illustrated and a waterproof terrain map — handy for those using hoses.
