Academy cadets will parachute into Orange Bowl

Staff reports Updated: January 4, 2012 at 12:00 am

The Air Force Academy parachute team will carry the U.S. flag into Sun Life Stadium before the Orange Bowl, just days after winning the 2011 National Collegiate Parachuting Championship.

Five members of the Wings of Blue team will parachute into the stadium in Miami on Wednesday before No. 14 Clemson plays No. 23 West Virginia.

Wings of Blue won the college parachute title after competing in the nationals Dec. 28 through Jan. 1 in Eloy, Ariz.

The team won 21 gold medals, 15 silver and seven bronze.

The Air Force Academy makes more than 20,000 parachute jumps a year and trains about 700 cadets in basic free-fall parachuting annually.
