Junior Achievement of Southern Colorado Inc. has fine-turned fundraising auction action into a well-oiled machine - and an all-around evening of fun.
True to form, the group's 20th anniversary "Make a Splash" on May 11, which drew 360 merrymakers, lived up to that 2013 theme.
The JA tradition, raising funds for 19 K-12 programs in business, economics, personal finance and more, is a black-tie evening filled with gourmet food, a ballroom-sized silent auction and a spirited live auction. No speeches, no statistics, just a filled-with-laughter chat-a-thon evening with friends teamed with auction competition.
The event raised $87,000. The auction committee included Kathy Schwindt, JA board chair; Leonard Miller, Schmidt Construction; Scott Shollenbarger, CSHP; Rita Nicholson, Wells Fargo Insurance Services; Laura Frank, Lockheed Martin; Michael Spry, Pepsico; Ann Sulley, Rescare Homecare; Karin Kovalovsky, Aventa Credit Union; Jan Booker, JA Outstanding Volunteer; Penny Immel, JA.
Summit sponsors, the top ones: Antlers Hilton, site of the gala, Colorado Springs Health Partners, Comcast, Commerce Bank, El Pomar Foundation, FedEx Services, Lockheed Martin, Schmidt Construction and Wells Fargo Advisors.
