Citizen Soldier Connection, which matches Fort Carson soldiers and their families with "extended" families in the community, has done an especially good job.
These supporters, and partners like Northwestern Mutual, are "so embracive of our men and women in the military. ... That's why so many of us stay here," said board president Terrance McWilliams of El Pomar Foundation.
Members and the board of CSC threw a thank-you luncheon at the El Paso Club for Northwestern Mutual for the July Rocky Mountain Scramble golf event, reception and auction. The event raised almost $63,000 to be used in the mission of "Connect. Support. Community."
The scramble at The Broadmoor drew 142 golfers. The reception the night before at The Broadmoor Golf Club was a shopper's delight with athletic goodies from Vincent Jackson, Peyton Manning, Goose Gossage, the Colorado Rockies and the Denver Nuggets. A golf package for Tubac Golf Resort in New Mexico was so hotly contested that it sold twice for $1,700 each.
The nonprofit Citizen Soldier Connection projects include connecting soldiers who are away from home at the holidays with local families for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner, a thank-you family picnic for troops and their families, providing mentors and friends for troops and assigning ambassadors to families of fallen heroes while they are here for services. CSC has also adopted Fort Carson's Mounted Color Guard.
