AROUND TOWN: Broadmoor Skating Club celebrates a golden 75 years

The names were from the pages of figure skating history. The evening was glittering, those attending moving with graceful athletic elegance.

The Broadmoor Skating Club marked its 75th anniversary with a gala Aug. 10 at Cheyenne Mountain Resort and a luncheon at the World Figure Skating Museum and Hall of Fame on Aug. 11.

Joining the celebration were guests from 20 states and four countries, Canada, Mexico, Australia and England.

A highlight of the celebration was the unveiling of a skating sculpture, donated by friends of the BSC, at the World Figure Skating Museum. Emcee for the gala was the longest-standing BSC member, Christy Haigler Krall, a past Olympian. The audience heard from 1990 world champion Jill Trenary; Carol Heiss Jenkins (1960 Olympic ladies champion) on behalf of her brother-in-law, the 1960 Olympic men's champion, David Jenkins, and Carol's husband, Hayes Alan Jenkins, the 1956 Olympic men's champion.

Debbie Might, a 38-year member of the BSC, chaired the festivities, assisted by her husband, Mark Steinberg; skating coach Janet Champion, past president of the BSC; Rita Cerny and her husband John, a BSC board member; and former Broadmoor World Arena manager Lois Nesselhauf.

Other attendees included Colleen O'Connor and Jim Millns, 1976 Olympic dance bronze medalists; Andra McLaughlin Kelly, World Team member who went pro to take over Sonja Henie's spot in Hollywood Ice Review, and her husband "Red" Kelly, eight-time Stanley Cup hockey winner with the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs.

Also: Christa Fassi, wife of famed skating coach Carlo Fassi; Caryn Kadavy, 1987 world ladies bronze medalist; Caydee Denney and John Coughlin, 2012 U.S. national pairs champions; Max Aaron, 2013 U.S. national men's champion; and Rachael Flatt, 2010 U.S. national ladies champion.
