Perhaps they are confused by the world they live in now, but those with dementia can often recall their long-ago past as they paint from memory their growing-up years, a favorite fishing hole, a special childhood pet or the swing on the front porch of their parents' farm.

The families of seniors with Alzheimer's saw bits and pieces of their family history come alive at the annual Memories in the Making art show and auction June 21 at Cheyenne Mountain Resort. Works in the art show juried by outside professionals were paired for sale with works by local artists.

Sponsors were Emeritus, Viewpointe, The Gazette and MacKenzie Place.

The MIM program, guided by artists and art therapy professionals, was a small Colorado Alzheimer's Association pilot program in 1994 that is now 90 sites strong at assisted-living communities, nursing homes and adult day programs throughout the state. Artists selected for this Memories in the Making auction and show: Irene Adamson, Nancy Ashmore, Carol Ayers, Fernando Berrios, Thelma Black, Ginny Blakeman, Irma Bracken, Ann Brawley, Myrna Carter, Mary Cedar, Elaine Curtis, Jeanette "Fay" Diss, Taeko Edwards, Anita Fredericks, Mary Griffin, Grete Hallstein, Midge Harbour, Jerry Henrichs. Kay Horita, Joy Kinney, Carol Markham, Pat MacLeod, Joy Middleton, Joan Mulvihill, Frances Munafo, Peggy Murphy, Richard Neve, Lena Padilla, Nancy Pollart, Mary Price, Carlyle Rasmussen, Edith Ross, Karen Sullivan, Glenna Vasquez, Amy Wasechek, Eleanor Wright.
