Gazette Premium Content Apology ordered for Colorado Springs teen in Facebook bullying case

On tap for a Colorado Springs teen who admitted to bullying classmates on Facebook: A dose of court-ordered empathy.

Kyle John Pate, 18, agreed Tuesday to write a letter of apology and craft a three-page paper about cyber-bullying after pleading guilty to misdemeanor harassment in a case that drew attention to online bullying in Falcon School District 49.

If Pate meets his part of the deal — which also includes performing 40 hours of community service and staying out of trouble for a year — the misdemeanor charge will be wiped from his criminal record, prosecutor Dan Martin said.

The plea deal averted a trial scheduled for Tuesday before El Paso County Judge Jonathan Walker.

Authorities say Pate and Alexander Sydney Natale, 18, were the D-49 students behind a Facebook page called “Falcon Problems” that took aim at Falcon High students. The page was quickly removed in March — but not before El Paso County sheriff’s investigators determined some of the posts were threatening, leading to citations against the pair.

Prosecutors dismissed charges against Natale in mid-September, court records show.

Pate and Natale attended alternative schools run by D-49, according to media reports.
