It's no mystery to Christian O'Shaughnessy how people view playwright Anton Chekhov.

"They think about the most morose feelings they've ever had, and boredom and so much fussiness," O'Shaughnessy says.

He completely disagrees.

"I've always been really drawn to plays by authors like Chekhov," O'Shaughnessy says. "There's a purity of those plays I really appreciated. They can seem so academic, but they're really simple in terms of human emotion. It's all longing and loss and it's all very simple."

He'll direct his own adaptation of Chekhov's 1900 classic "Three Sisters." It's the second show of Theatre 'd Art's seventh season.

He's reworked the classic script into a more modern day setting, he says. It stars Carmen Vreeman, Erica Erickson and Caroline Carr as the sisters Prozorov.

After the death of their father, the sisters and their brother become increasingly hopeless living in an unsophisticated rural Russian town. The presence of a nearby artillery post and its officers are their only joy.

"This is a play that is so primarily about youth - not only youth but the loss of youth," O'Shaughnessy says. "And ... how bad that can hurt to get older and feel you never met your potential, that life never gave you the cards you felt entitled to."

And, "I always like a good play about sexy girls doing bad things."
