A suspected robber wasn't expecting the public to step in when he allegedly tried to steal cash from a register at a Colorado Springs supermarket on Sunday.

Joseph Michael Grimmig, 27, was arrested and booked into the El Paso County jail on suspicion of robbery and held on a $10,000 bond, records show.

Around 1:15 p.m., police responded to a theft in progress at the King Soopers store located at 3250 Centennial Blvd., where customers and staff were reportedly in a physical confrontation with the alleged robber.

According to police, the suspect, identified as Grimmig, allegedly shoved a clerk away from a register and snatched cash from the open drawer. The clerk wrapped his arms around Grimmig and several customers jumped in to hold him down, police said.

Grimmig resisted arrest and tried to flee from the public surrounding him, but police were able to detain him and take him into custody.

Court records show Grimmig's next appearance in court is scheduled for Tuesday, on suspicion of robbery.
