The first in-camp depth chart for Super Bowl runner-up Atlanta includes Air Force graduate Ben Garland as the starter at right guard.
Garland and Wes Schweitzer have been locked in a battle for the position.
Garland, a defensive lineman at Air Force, played both ways last year, logging 52 snaps on the defensive line and 49 on offense.
“The more I learn about what I’m trying to stop on one side, the more you learn about what to do on the other side,” Garland told The Gazette in March. “The more you learn what’s hard for me on one side, the more I learn what to do against someone.”
Falcons coach Dan Quinn told the team’s website that he expects the competition to go deep into the preseason.
The 29-year-old Garland, a four-year NFL veteran, is a captain with the Air National Guard 140th Security Forces Squadron, based at Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora.
