The Air Force Academy issued a statement Tuesday morning calling off its Saturday football game at Navy, for now.

“At this time travel for all intercollegiate athletics is cancelled this includes the Air Force Navy game Oct. 5,” the academy said.

The naval Academy was more optimistic that Air Force would make the game if a shutdown was lifted, delaying a decision on the matchup until Thursday.

The government shutdown sunk the Navy navy showdown and led to furloughs for thousands of civilian federal workers in the Pikes Peak region Tuesday. In most defense Department offices in the region, workers showed up on time Tuesday and the majority were sent home with furlough notices.

At Fort Carson, Albert Rivera, vice president of the local chapter of the American Federation of Government Employees described chaos.

He said different units on the post had different standards for which workers would be sent home without pay.

“It’s an absolute cluster,” Rivera said.

Congress meanwhile, had furloughs of its own.

Catherine Mortensen, spokeswoman for Colorado Springs republican U.S. Rep. Doug Lamborn said the office had furloughed 43 percent of its staff. Most of the workers sent home deal with constituent concerns, she said.
