A duplex fire east of downtown Colorado Springs claimed two lives Friday afternoon and sent a 2-year-old child to a hospital in critical condition.

A man and a 6-year-old child died in the blaze in the 700 block of East Cucharras Street, said police Lt. Howard Black. The 2-year-old was flown to a hospital in Denver.

When firefighters arrived shortly after 2 p.m., heavy smoke had filled the side of the duplex that had caught fire, said Lt. Kevin Ducy, spokesman for the Colorado Springs Fire Department. Firefighters extricated the three victims and attempted to resuscitate them. The fire was quickly extinguished.

The man and two children were the only people in that side of the duplex, Ducy said. The man died at the home, and the 6-year-old died at a local hospital.

There was no damage to the other side of the duplex. A woman and her dog were inside, but they escaped safely.

Police detectives are investigating the blaze along with the Fire Department.

“Any death in which a fire is involved, we would treat that as a crime scene until we know otherwise,” said police Lt. Howard Black. “There is nothing at this time that we have that would rule this ... a homicide, but it is a very active criminal scene that we will take a look at and spend time with our colleagues at the Fire Department.”

Black did not say how the victims knew each other or how the fire was sparked.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 444-7000. To remain anonymous, call the Crime Stoppers Tip Line at 634-STOP (7867) or 1-800-222-8477.
