A plume of smoke on June 23, 2012, that became a raging firestorm forever changed the Pikes Peak region.

The first 96 hours of the Waldo Canyon fire, though, were merely a blip on the fire timeline, an introduction to a story that will shape the region for decades to come.

And in a community that has come one year later to know that a wildfire is not a once-in-a-lifetime disaster, the lessons learned from the veterans of the Waldo Canyon fire are ones to remember.
